Religious freedom is often called The First Freedom in a reference to both its position in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and its assumed importance above all other freedoms guaranteed to US citizens. Even though we know not all things people call “religion” or “religious” are allowed under the law, we commonly assume religious freedom to be a clear and obvious thing that protects the rights of individuals to believe and practice in accordance with their religion. When people of every political stripe talk about religious freedom this way, it distracts from and covers up how religious freedom in US law works to manage what gets to count as religion or religious and, therefore, what does not. This chapter is an exploration of how two famous, but different, US Supreme Court cases complicate the common cliché that religious freedom is about the guaranteed rights for individuals to practice their religion. In both Church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye v. City of Hialeah (1993) and Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. (2014), “religion” and “religious” were renegotiated in ways that unsettle the stereotypical cliche of religion as personal, private beliefs and complicate the what and the who of religious freedom.

World Religions at Nebraska Wesleyan University is a well-connected course serving philosophy and religion, international studies, and global diversity graduation requirements. In spring 2019 we piloted a redesigned World Religions in order to critique the World Religions Paradigm . Using Peter Felton’s (Elon University) model for students as co-designers and strategizing selective responses to AAC&U funding (Interfaith Youth Core curriculum initiative ), this course rejects the standard textbook, show-and-tell exoticism, and multiple-choice exams replacing them with examinations of clichés about religion and intentionally provocatively juxtaposed case studies based on JZ Smith’s advice for teaching, assessed through written arguments about interpretations and power. The pedagogical goal: critical and self-interrogation of cultural bias, the influence of colonialism, and a Christian (Protestant) liberal model. Curricular goals: introduce theorizing in the religious studies gateway, critically engage what students expect a World Religions course to do, and ensure that the IDEA prompts indicated as essential are maintained or improved.

The World Religions Paradigm (WRP) remains popular in classrooms despite its embedded problems that scholars have recognized for decades. The primary ways of responding to those problems have been either to continue teaching the WRP out of convenience or to reject it, removing World Religions courses from a curriculum completely. Using Jonathan Z. Smith’s six rules on teaching an undergraduate religion course from his essay “Approaching the College Classroom” in On Teaching Religion (2012), the redesign of World Religions at Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU) represents an important alternative. A model for those who recognize the problems with the WRP but who do not want to (or cannot) stop teaching the topic altogether, the NWU World Religions pilot course finds a way to do both, advocating for not only the continued offering of World Religions courses but the promotion of critical thought and self-reflection among students while doing so.

Non-peer review essay written as part of my work as Editorial Assistant for the Bulletin for the Study of Religion.

“The Experiment” presents scholars of religion with an opportunity to draw upon their training to reflect upon a contemporary issue. Editorial assistant Jacob Barrett engages with a recent edited volume from Routledge titled Leading Works in Law and Religion that, while focusing on the identity of the subfield of law and religion within the discipline of legal studies in the United Kingdom and Ireland, provides many sites for comparison with the religion and law subfield of religious studies in the United States context. Drawing upon the model set by the volume, Barrett imagines what a volume titled Leading Works in Religion and Law could look like and what the subfield of religion and law stands to gain from engaging in a project like the one done by its law and religion counterpart. 


About Me

Why “The Reluctant Americanist”?

“The Reluctant Americanist” might seem like a strange name for this website, especially given that my work focuses on the United States and “reluctant” is not an adjective an academic would typically want to be associated with. So, how did the name come to be? To find the answer to that question, we have to go back to the first week of my M.A. program. I was eager and ambitious as early graduate students are, and I thought I knew what I wanted to study. The first week of classes, I emailed a professor I wanted to work with and set up a meeting to, as I put it, “chat about my research interests and advice in starting to look at PhD programs.” We met, and after I gave my whole spiel about wanting to do some big research project that included examples from numerous nations, traditions, and time periods (remember when I said I was eager and ambitious?) the professor began asking me questions about what I was interested in. I spent the next thirty minutes dodging their attempts to get me to express an interest in the United States that was very clearly there. Almost every answer I gave went something like, “Well, you know how in the United States this happens? What if I studied that but not in America?” After a while, the professor sat for a minute and offered me this:

“I think you are a reluctant Americanist.”

I remember sitting there not quite sure how to respond because I didn’t know what that meant, but as soon as the words hit me they felt right. I began jokingly referring to myself as a reluctant Americanist when people would ask what kind of scholar I wanted to be and was always met with a laugh. I wore that label and parroted it for several months after that meeting, never entirely sure what it meant. Overtime, though, I began to develop an explanation that framed my work in a way that I felt accurately described what I wanted to do while also making sense of my professor’s initial comment. I was an Americanist, but only because I was actually interested in conversations about religion and politics and theories of governance, and looking at religious freedom in the United States was a good example to use to explore those conversations.

And so, “The Reluctant Americanist” is the name of this website because my work focuses on the United States and therefore, by most definitions, I am an Americanist. I’m a reluctant one, though, because being an Americanist comes with the tendency to promote notions of American exceptionalism and (whether explicitly or not) assumptions that the United States is interesting in and of itself. For me, studying how the court system in the US defines religion and manages diverse groups with competing interests is a way into understanding the rhetorical functions of “religion” and how both the nation state and those it governs make use of the category.
